Metcalfe’s Law explains why online communities and forums become more valuable as they grow. The idea is simple: every new member who joins doesn’t just add value on their own—they create new possible connections with every existing member. This means the total value of the community grows much faster than just the number of users.

For example, if a forum has only 10 members, there are limited conversations and perspectives. But if it grows to 1,000 members, the number of possible interactions increases dramatically. Members can find more relevant discussions, get faster answers, and connect with people who share very specific interests. This makes the community more useful and engaging for everyone.

However, growth alone isn’t enough. If new members don’t participate or connect with others, the value doesn’t fully materialize. That’s why strong onboarding, clear topics, and active discussions are important—they help turn new users into active participants.

In online communities, Metcalfe’s Law highlights a key truth: the real value isn’t just in the number of users, but in the number of meaningful connections between them.
